Copper Refining by Fire

Copper refining by fire is an ancient method used to mass-produce pure and high-grade copper. Utilizing fire to refine metals is an immensely old practice, and the art of refining copper by fire goes back thousands of years. This method is often referred to as cupellation since the technique was developed by the Romans over two thousand years ago. Copper refining by fire is still practiced in some parts of the world but is not as popular as it once was due to modern methods of copper refining.

In the copper refining by fire process, copper ore is mixed with other materials such as charcoal and then heated to a very high temperature (in excess of 1000°C) which allows the copper and the other materials to be melted together. The molten mixture is then poured slowly into a shallow mold where it solidifies. The molten mixture contains impurities which must be removed in order to produce pure copper. This is done by skimming off the slag that has formed on top of the molten mixture. The slag contains most of the impurities which have been removed from the mixture. The remaining mixture, which is now purer, is then heated again and the process is repeated until the desired level of purity is achieved.
