20CrNi Overview
20CrNi steel is a series of low-carbon, low-alloy steel containing chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) as an alloying element. It has good mechanical properties, machinability and processability. It is usually used in all kinds of quenching and tempering applications, such as transmission parts, drive components, engine components and valves. 20CrNi is also used in automotive structural and mechanical applications. The typical tensile strength of 20CrNi is 650-750 MPa.
Applications
20CrNi steel is primarily used in the production of quenched and tempered parts such as gears, shafts, and other components of vehicles. It is used in the automotive industry due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.. This steel is used in aerospace, agricultural and construction applications, power transmission components and more. Its superior strength and excellent machinability make it an ideal choice when designing parts and components where high strength and good wear resistance are required.
The excellent ductility and toughness of this material make it a great choice for the manufacture of components for industrial machinery and for use in agricultural and construction applications. Due to its superior strength, 20CrNi steel is often used for the production of aircraft parts, such as landing gears, rotors, and transmission components. 20CrNi also finds use in general industrial machinery as well as in power transmission components.
Welding
20CrNi steel can be welded using all welding methods. This steel should be preheated before welding to reduce the risk of cracking and hydrogen embrittlement. When welding 20CrNi, an austenitic stainless steel welding procedure should be employed. Shielding gases typically employed for welding 20CrNi include argon and carbon dioxide.
Heat Treatment
20CrNi is usually supplied in the annealed or normalized condition and can be hardened by quenching and tempering. The optimal quenching temperature ranges from 820-870℃ with a holding time of 1-2 hours, followed by oil or air-cooling. The tempering temperature should range from 450-590℃.
Machinability
This steel has excellent machinability and can be machined using all standard machining techniques. It can be machined at approximately 30-35% of the rate of 1018 mild steel. 120-180 surface feet per minute (SFM) should be used with high-speed steel tools.
Conclusion
20CrNi is an important alloy steel and has many applications in automotive and industrial devices, due to its excellent mechanical properties. It is very easy to Weld and can be heat treated to further improve its mechanical properties. It has good machinability and can be used to manufacture parts and components with high precision.
