Precision sand casting is a type of casting process in which sand is used to form molds. During the course of the process, the sand mold is filled with metal, and when it is cooled, the sand can be easily chipped away or separated, leaving the casting in its desired shape. The process begins by preparing the sand molds, in which a template or pattern can be used to form the molds. Then the molten metal is poured into the molds to form the castings.

The sand molds used in precision sand casting are usually made from either resin-bonded sand or chromite sand. A binder, typically liquid, is added to the sand mixture to hold the mold in shape. When the sand is mixed with binder and packed into the molds, the sand becomes very strong and is able to withstand the pressure of the molten metal poured into the molds.

The precision sand casting process can be divided into the following stages: first, the sand molds are made and inspected for accuracy. Second, the molten metal is melted in a furnace and cast into the prepared molds. Third, the molten metal solidifies and the molds are shaken for uniformity. The disadvantages of precision sand casting include the fact that it is a slow process, as the molds need to cool down (solidify) before the casting can be removed. The process also tends to produce rough and imperfect castings, although the use of better molds, the addition of a hardening agent, or the use of core material to increase mold density can improve the quality of the castings.
