In the modern machining industry, dry cutting processing is a kind of advanced processing techniques that replaces traditional dripping or combination of dripping and dry cutting products. It applies dry cutting method directly to the workpiece, such as drilling and tapping, so as to achieve the same processing effect. Compared with traditional cutting tools such as lathes, saws and millers, the dry cutting processing technique is more efficient, accurate and economical.

On the one hand, the dry cutting processing technique greatly reduces the reliance on coolant, reduces the environmental pollution caused by cutting fluid and the occurrence of secondary pollution. On the other hand, dry cutting processing is not limited by cutting fluid and nozzles, so it has a good ability to finish complicate surfaces, which can improve the production precision. Moreover, it can reduce the cutting time and thus increase more productivity.

However, due to the huge difference in the cutting conditions between dry cutting and traditional wet cutting, the tool life of dry cutting is far lower than that of wet cutting. To solve the problem, reasonable choice of cutting parameters, reasonable maintenance of machine tool and reasonable selection of cutting tools are the three key measures for dry cutting process.

In the dry cutting processing, the cutting speed, negative degree and feed size must be reasonably selected according to the workpiece material and the required effect. The reasonable choice of cutting parameters is one of the very important factors to ensure the efficiency, accuracy and longevity of dry cutting tools. For example, when dry cutting stainless steel and other materials, if the cutting speed is too low, the oxidation state at the cutting edge is too large, which will reduce the machinability of the tool and lead to poor chip breaking performance, making it easier to cause tool wear.

2. Reasonable maintenance of machine tool

To ensure the machining quality of the workpiece and maintain the service life of the tool, regular maintenance of the machine tool is necessary for dry cutting process. Regular check on the accuracy test and adjustment; inspection of machine tool preparation status; periodic maintenance and so on are necessary during dry machining process.

3. Reasonable selection of cutting tools

It is important to select the right cutting tool for dry cutting processing. Depending on the material and application of the workpiece, the cutting tools such as drill bits, boring bits and end mills should be selected reasonably. The cutting speed, feed rate and cutting force should be within the specified range of cutting parameters to reduce the cutting force, maximize the tool life and obtain better chip breaking effect.
