Thread Milling
Thread milling is a machining process used to create internal and external threads in an array of materials. It is a versatile process which can be used to cut a variety of thread sizes and forms, such as NPT, Acme, and rectangular thread forms. In addition, threads may be either straight or tapered. This process is capable of producing threads with exceptional surface finishes and tight tolerances.
Thread milling is used in various industries such as automotive, aerospace and medical engineering. It can be used to manufacture parts for aircraft engines and turbine blades, as well as precision medical tools and implants. This process is often used when high accuracy and quality is required, or when the material is difficult to work with.
Thread milling involves rotating a milling tool with specially shaped teeth into a work piece. The tool is then fed axially in unison with the spindle rotation. The tool geometry allows each tooth to remove material in one or multiple passes depending on the material type and desired number of teeth per inch. The depth of cut, speed, and feeds should be set according to recommended parameters as to not overload the machine bearings.
Over time, thread milling has become much more efficient thanks to advancements in CNC technology. CNC machines have allowed for a much higher degree of accuracy and speed, as well as the ability to program tool movements for optimal performance. This technology has enabled thread milling to become the preferred choice for many applications where precision threads are required.
Thread milling is typically less expensive than other machining processes, such as thread tapping and thread grinding, due to the reduced labor and setup costs. This process also produces a much higher quality thread in difficult to machine materials. Additionally, thread milling generates less cutting forces on the material than with traditional threading methods, which reduces risk of damaging the part.
Thread milling is an effective and often times preferable choice for a variety of applications that require precision threads. With the advancement of CNC technology, thread milling has become a widely used process in many industries. This process provides the highest levels of both quality and accuracy, making it a reliable option for many businesses.
