Magnetic Particle Testing

Also known as Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), magnetic particle testing is a non-destructive testing technique used to detect surface and sub-surface discontinuities in metals. This form of inspection is widely employed in both industrial and engineering applications.

The magnetic particle testing process is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, which states that the passage of an electric current generates a magnetic field around it. Magnetic particles, which are made of iron, steel, and other particles with magnetic properties, are then introduced into the magnetic field. The magnetic field causes the particles to orient in a certain way, and any surface or subsurface discontinuities present in the material under inspection become visible in the form of evidence of magnetic particle clustering or otherwise.

To carry out magnetic particle testing, a coil of wire is wound around the object to be inspected. An alternating current is then passed through the coil of wire. This induces a magnetic field, which in turn orient the particles. The particles are suspended in a liquid or dry powder, applied to the material under test. A coloured contrast agent can also be added to the particles to make the evidence of magnetic clustering more visible.

Many of the industrial and engineering applications of magnetic particle testing are related to inspecting parts or components for cracks or other types of defects. Metal products, such as engine blocks, welded joint connections, piping, and more all undergo magnetic particle testing in order to ensure quality and proper functioning. In particular, oil-field and nuclear-power plants rely heavily on such inspection techniques to ensure that their products are free from potential safety or reliability problems.

In addition to industrial and engineering applications, Magnetic Particle Testing is often used in scientific and medical research, particularly in NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Imaging. NMR Imaging allows scientists and medical professionals to visualize the Biological and chemical properties of substances, which helps them to identify disease and develop effective treatments.

This form of non-destructive testing is used to ensure that all products meet the required standards and can be used safely and reliably.
