Introduction

Manufacturing is the industrial process of producing goods from raw materials, parts and components, as well as institutionalized forms of labor. It is one of the most important aspects of global business. Throughout the years, manufacturing has evolved and changed to become more efficient, cost effective and to ultimately meet customer demands faster and more accurately. The emergence and development of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence have opened new doors in terms of efficiency and cost reduction. Recently, a new manufacturing system has emerged that is capable of handling a broad range of materials and production processes. This system is called a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS).

Flexible Manufacturing System

A Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is a computer integrated manufacturing or automated production system (CIM/APS) that is capable of manufacturing parts that vary in geometry and complexity. This type of system is based on the principle that the same production line can be used to manufacture different types of parts without the need for retooling or reprogramming. This type of system is ideal for batch production, as it is capable of efficiently adapting to product variations.

Flexible Manufacturing System

Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) requires a combination of advanced technology, as well as strong organization and management. FMSs are composed of three major components: control systems, machines and robots, and material handling systems. The control system is responsible for planning, scheduling, and controlling all of the manufacturing operations. Various types of machine tools, robots, and other automated machines, such as CNC (computer numerically three-dimensional contouring) are used to cut, shape and process materials into components, parts and finished products. Lastly, the material handling system is used to transport parts and materials, store finished components and feed parts into and out of machines.

Conclusion

The emergence of advanced technologies, such as robotics and artificial intelligence, has allowed for the development of complex manufacturing systems such as Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS). These systems are increasingly being used in industries that manufacture small batch and large run products, as they are capable of handling a broad range of materials and production processes. This type of system requires a combination of advanced technology, as well as strong organization and management. FMSs are able to reduce costs, increase production speed, and increase quality through automation and analysis of manufacturing data.
