Meaning, if a person applies to a job and meets the basic requirements, they are to be given the same chance at the job as everyone else. It is illegal to discriminate in any way.

Equal opportunity is not just a protective measure, however; it also seeks to ensure that there is diversity and fairness in the workplace. For example, the majority of men may be the ones typically hired in a certain job position, but equal opportunity makes sure that qualified women and other minorities are just as likely to be hired. This is known as equality of opportunity.
