Equal Opportunity Laws
The concept of equal opportunity laws has been in place for many years. These laws, also recognized as anti-discrimination laws, serve to protect people from unjustly being treated differently based on race, gender, age, disability, and other factors. Meaning, if a person applies to a job and meets the basic requirements, they are to be given the same chance at the job as everyone else. It is illegal to discriminate in any way.
Equal opportunity is not just a protective measure, however; it also seeks to ensure that there is diversity and fairness in the workplace. For example, the majority of men may be the ones typically hired in a certain job position, but equal opportunity makes sure that qualified women and other minorities are just as likely to be hired. This is known as equality of opportunity.
Equal opportunity laws are not limited to just employment, however. It can also be applied in housing, education, public accommodations, and other areas that provide opportunities. Even free speech and expression are granted through Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The range of equal opportunity laws is expansive and is covered by a number of organizations and councils, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the United States Department of Justice, and the Housing and Urban Development Department.
The evolution of equal opportunity laws is a lengthy one and there continues to be discussion and debate about the effectiveness of these laws and their enforcement. As new cases come to light, the politics of justice continue to be debated among literature, media, citizens, and governmental bodies. There have also been quick responses to developing cases in the form of legislative action, but critics of such legislation argue that it does not always address the underlying problem.
Although there are still injustices in certain areas, overall, equal opportunity legislation has helped to create social change that promotes equality. This has been seen in areas such as voting rights, job security, education, and the ability of persons to apply for a job regardless of gender or racial backgrounds. Equal opportunity laws help ensure that those who are capable and work hard can achieve their life’s ambitions.
As technology and changes in the political and economic climate are prominent factors in modern society, equal opportunity laws remain a pillar that protects and promotes equal rights for all. Laws are continually adapted and reformed to rise to new challenges, as well as enhance existing protections. As long as these laws are enforced and practiced, the goal of equal outcomes for all can continue to move forward.
