ASTM A480M-1998 Flat-Rolled Stainless and Heat-Resisting Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip

1. Scope

1.1 This specification2 covers a group of general requirements that, unless otherwise specified in the purchase order or in an individual specification, shall apply to rolled steel plate, sheet, and strip, under each of the following specifications issued by ASTM:

Specifications A167, A176, A240/A240M, A263, A264, A265, A666, A693, A793, and A895.

2. Referenced Documents

2.1 The ASTM Standards referenced in 1.1 shall, as required to define the extent of the purchase, be specified in the order.

3. Terminology

3.1 The terminology of coils and cut lengths shall also be applied for rolled product widths exceeding 530mm (21in).

4. General Requirements

4.1 Material furnished to this specification shall conforming to the applicable requirements of the current edition of specification in which the order is placed.

4.2 General requirements applicable to this product as a whole, and which supplement those specified in the referenced documents shall be as follows:

4.2.1 Quantity (Weight): The weights of the various sizes, classes and grades shall be determined in accordance with the applicable requirements of the referenced documents.

4.2.2 Measurement Tolerances for Cut Lengths: Unless otherwise specified, the average minimum distinct public length shall be reasonable tolerance of 5mm (0.2in) and the variation in 1525mm (60in) length shall not exceed 10mm (0.4in).

4.2.3 Straightness: Unless otherwise agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser, the strip and strip from which it is cut shall have no wavering side curl or twist exceeding 0.50mm/2m (0.020 in/4ft) over any whole length of distribution.

4.2.4 Surface: Unless otherwise specified, the material furnished to this specification shall be clean. The ground surface shall be uniform and shall have no raised or unduly depressed surfaces.

4.2.5 Blister and Can Banding: Unless specified otherwise, blister and can banding shall be avoided in the manufacture of the material.

4.3 Additional requirements, in addition to those requirements specified in the referenced documents and in this specification, are permitted when agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser.

5. Product Analysis Requirements

5.1 The chemical composition of steel plates, sheets, and strips produced to this specification shall meet the requirements of the applicable referenced documents. Analysis shall be made from the separate product unless otherwise specified or mutually agreed upon.

6. Test Report

6.1 The mill report for each heat shall include the results of chemical analysis and, when specified or mutually agreed upon, mechanical properties.

7. Protection

7.1 Unexposed surfaces shall be adequately protected prior to shipment. The protection shall not be capable of leaving any stain or discoloration on either of the unexposed surfaces.

7.2 The purchaser may specify additional protection, or replace the protection specified herein with other type of protection at its own option.

8. Packaging

8.1 In the absence of any other instructions, the material shall be bent on pallets or loaded in steel drums or boxes so as to be suitable for the transportation without damage or fundamental disadvantage.

9. Precision and Bias

9.1 Tests performed according to this specification are considered valid if the Standard deviation of the test results is equal to or below 0.7% of the specified value of property.

9.2 Customers should understand that independent testing may be conducted at their request that could result in different values than those listed herein.

10. Keywords

10.1 chemistry; heat resisting steel; plate; sheet; stainless steel; steel; strip

ASTM A480M–1998 is a specification that describes the general requirements for flat rolled stainless steel and heat-resistant steel plate, sheet, and strip. It is applicable to plate up to 12.7 millimeters thick and strip in coils and cut lengths up to 8 millimeters thick. This standard covers rolled stainless and heat-resistant steel sheet and strip in thicknesses up to and including 6.35 millimeters.

The general requirements include uniformity and quality of the material. With respect to surface finish and dimensional tolerances, these are set at the manufacturers discretion unless otherwise specified. Further details and considerations of rolled stainless steel and heat-resistant steel are outlined in ASTM A480M–1998 as an accepted practice. Along with the other ASTM standards, it is an important reference in the production and quality control of these metals.

ASTM A480M–1998 covers several types of requirements. This includes thickness, width, length, flatness tolerance, corner radius, and finishing specifications. Additionally, the type and grade of raw material must be clearly labeled during production, such as stainless steel grades or the designations for heat-resistant steel. In addition, this standard details the use of test pieces from the manufacturing runs, outlining the process and methods for maintaining a consistent quality output.

In compliance with ASTM A480M–1998, the manufacturer must assure customer satisfaction with the product. To maintain consistent quality and compliance, the manufacturer should control product handling, storage, and shipping. This will ensure the customer receives a finished product that meets their specifications.

ASTM A480M–1998 is an important standard with regards to rolled stainless steel and heat-resistant steel in both thickness and precision. By following the general requirements, raw material type, finishing specifications, and quality processes, the manufacturer can ensure customer satisfaction with the delivered product.
