Copper smelting is a process by which copper ore is extracted from the ground and converted into metal for use in everyday products. The product of copper smelting is slag, a mixture of impurities, nonmetallic minerals, and metals extracted from the ore. The primary purpose of copper smelting is to purify the copper to the desired level of purity.

The process by which copper smelting slag is purified is known as copper slag purification. This process begins with the removal of large pieces of slag through selective breaking and grinding. The slag is then further broken down into finer particles by means of crushing and screening. Following this, a magnetic separation process is used to remove impurities, create smaller particle sizes and create distinct fractions of metals.

The slag is then fed into a rotary kiln, where the temperature reaches approximately 1,000-1,600 degrees Celsius. At this temperature the slag begins to soften. This provides two key benefits: it removes most of the nonmetallic minerals from the slag and it increases the reactivity of the slag, allowing for further purification of metals.

The purification process continues inside the kiln as chemical reactions are induced at the high temperatures. This process is known as pyrometallurgical smelting and is used to separate the impurities from the metals. During this smelting process, metals are oxidized, producing oxides and sulfides, which are then removed from the slag. This process also helps to create an oxygen-rich environment for additional chemical reactions to take place.

Once the smelting and refining processes are complete, the slag is removed and further processed. A series of physical and chemical purification processes takes place, including leaching, flotation, and filtration. Depending on the desired purity, multiple rounds of leaching, flotation, and filtration may be required before the purification process is complete.

The end result of the copper smelting slag purification process is the clean, pure copper metal ready to be used in a variety of applications. This purification process helps ensure that the copper used in everyday items is true to its maximum potential, providing the best possible product for consumers.
