Classification and Composition of Brazing Alloys (GB5293-85)

Brazing alloys are used in the process of joining two or more components together to form a continuous unit using a filler metal that has a melting temperature lower than the melting temperature of the base metals being joined. Brazing is used for a number of reasons, such as to increase a joint’s strength or to repair damaged components. Brazing alloys are classified into four categories: fiber-reinforced alloys, silver-copper alloys, aluminum-magnesium alloys, and silver alloys.

1. Fiber-Reinforced Brazing Alloys

Fiber-reinforced brazing alloys are composed of at least 70 percent silver and no more than 10 percent copper. The remaining composition is made up of fibrous brazing material and flux material. 2. Silver-Copper Alloys

4. Silver Alloys

Silver alloys are composed primarily of silver, with the remainder being made up of other components such as copper, zinc, and boron. Silver alloys are usually composed of at least 65% silver, but may contain as little as 45% silver, depending on the application. Silver alloys are used in a variety of applications due to their low melting points and high strength.
