The cut is a key technology in the extrusion forging process. It is a necessary process for the extrusion forging production of various parts. The cutting knurl is preceded by an extrusion process, followed by ringing or punching. The later process determines the size and accuracy of the production process. The cut is mainly used for the production of a variety of pins, shafts, raw blades, and other partially extruded parts.

The cutting knurl of the extruded parts is mainly accomplished through a variety of cutting tools, such as round knives, angled cutters, pick drills, boring knives, etc. The size of the cutting knurl is determined by the size of the extruded hole, which is known as the hole pitch value. According to the material and size of the cut extruded parts, the metal cutting process (including metal cutting knurls) is required. When cutting the metal for the knurl, the cutting wire consumes a certain amount of material.

The amount of metal material consumed by the cutting wire mainly depends on the cross-sectional area of the cutting area per unit length, the cutting speed and the specific cutting force applied to the cutting edge. When selecting different cutting knurl wire diameters, the cutting wire per unit length also changes, so that the amount of metal material consumed by the cutting edge is also different. Pc = K × F × V × L

In the formula, Pc represents the metal material consumed by the cutting edge; K represents the coefficient of metal material consumption at the cutting edge, which is related to the cutting accuracy and cutting nature of the knurl cutting; F represents the specific cutting force applied to the cutting edge, which affects the geometrical shape of the cutting surface; V represents the cutting speed; and L represents the cutting length of the cut.

Therefore, the calculation of the metal material consumed by the cutting wire, that is, the assessment of the cutting wire on the knurl cutting for extruded parts, should not only consider the cutting performance of the cutting wire, but also consider the processing accuracy, cutting speed and cutting length of the cutting knurl, so as to ensure the quality and accuracy of the cutting parts in the extrusion forging process.
