Chemical Composition of AISI 31658 Stainless Steel 0Cr17Ni12Mo2N
AISI 31658 (0Cr17Ni12Mo2N) stainless steel is an austenitic steel containing 17% Cr, 12% Ni, 2% Mo, and N. It is a high corrosion-resistant steel alloy commonly used in high temperature environments, such as process vessels and boilers. AISI 31658 is most resistant to acid corrosion, chloride ion corrosion, pitting corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, making it suitable for a wide variety of demanding industrial applications.
This particular grade of stainless steel is composed primarily of iron, with a significant proportion of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen. The stainless steel properties of AISI 31658 (0Cr17Ni12Mo2N) are primarily driven by the presence of its main alloying components. The combination of chromium, nickel and molybdenum imparts strength, hardness, and superior corrosion resistance to AISI 31658, while nitrogen increases its strength further still.
The physical and chemical attributes of AISI 31658 (0Cr17Ni12Mo2N) stainless steel are outlined in the following table.
Chemical Composition
C: 0.05% max
Si: 0.50 % max
Mn: 2.00 % max
P: 0.30% max
S: 0.02% max
Ni: 11.0 - 14.0 %
Cr: 16.0 - 18.0 %
Mo: 2.00 - 2.50 %
N: 0.10 – 0.25 %
AISI 31658 (0Cr17Ni12Mo2N) stainless steel has a lower carbon content than its 316L stainless steel counterpart, which minimizes carbide precipitation and reduces the tendency for the alloy to become sensitised when exposed to elevated temperatures. This allows the alloy to be used in higher temperature applications.
The combination of chromium, nickel and molybdenum in AISI 31658 stainless steel makes it extremely resistant to corrosion. It is also resistant to many organic and inorganic substances, and is suitable for use in extreme-pressure environments. The addition of nitrogen further enhances the corrosion resistance properties of AISI 31658 and increases its strength.
Due to its superior corrosion resistance and high strength, AISI 31658 (0Cr17Ni12Mo2N) stainless steel is ideal for use in a range of demanding applications. It is commonly used for process vessels and boilers, kitchen and food-processing equipment, chimney liners and flue cracks, and architectural applications such as cladding and building facades. AISI 31658 is also used in oil and gas production, pipelines, and downhole tools.
AISI 31658 (0Cr17Ni12Mo2N) stainless steel can be cold-rolled or hot-rolled to produce products with a smooth or matted surface. It is commonly used in the form of stainless steel bars and sheets, and can also be produced in pipe, tube, plate, and coil forms.
Due to its unique combination of hardness, strength and corrosion resistance, AISI 31658 (0Cr17Ni12Mo2N) stainless steel is an ideal material for use in a range of demanding applications. Its robustness and durability make it an excellent choice for these applications.
