The mechanical properties of 00Cr17Ni12Mo2N (AISI 316N) and 00Cr17Ni13Mo2N (AISI 316LN) steel are respectively, tensile strength 430Mpa-550Mpa, elongation rate ≥40%, yield strength ≥205Mpa, hardness≤ MB205, final brinell hardness 217HB. Meanwhile, they have excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance, especially in chloride corrosion environment. Both of them can be used in many industrial production with complex environment. For gas-related industry, it is mainly used to manufacture gas cylinder and pipe. In the petroleum industry, it is mainly used in the most severe work environment, such as oil rigs and nuclear power plants.

AISI 316N and AISI 316LN Steels belong to the family of Austenitic stainless steels, which are strengthened by Nitrogen element. AISI 316N (UNS S31651) and AISI 316LN (UNS S31653) are combinations of the properties of AISI 316 and AISI 316L, respectively, and also have a nitrogen enrichment.

Designated Properties

AISI 316N and AISI 316LN have the same nominal composition, including 17-19wt% Chromium, 12-13wt% Nickel and 2-3wt%

Molybdenum with small amounts of Iron, Carbon and Manganese. The main difference is in their nitrogen content. AISI 316N has high Nitrogen content of 0.11-0.14% while AISI 316LN has lower Nitrogen content of 0.06-0.10%.

Corrosion Resistance

Both AISI 316N and AISI 316LN are corrosion resistant and can be used in a wide range of environments. AISI 316N offers superior corrosion resistance compared to AISI 316LN due to its high nitrogen content. This makes it suitable for more demanding applications where chlorides are present, especially in the saline environments such as sea water.

Metallurgical Process

The characteristics of both AISI 316N and AISI 316LN rely heavily on the metallurgical process. Molten steel is poured into molds and allowed to cool and solidify until it forms a desired structure and shape. After the steel has solidified, it is reheated, rolled, annealed and then subjected to pickling, which helps to remove imperfections from the surface.

Weldability

Both AISI 316N and AISI 316LN possess good weldability, though AISI 316N is much more prone to cracking when welding because of its higher nitrogen content. The weldability of both materials can be improved by reducing their nitrogen content by minimal post-weld heat treatment and using low heat input during welding.
