Technical Performance of Custom 455

Custom 455 is a high strength, corrosion resistant stainless steel that offers superior performance and has been used for many years in aerospace and engineering applications, particularly in components exposed to high temperatures and corrosive environments. The alloy offers excellent oxidation resistance, good machinability, and weldability and has a higher impact strength than most standard stainless steels. This grade of stainless steel also provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion and superior stress corrosion cracking resistance.

Custom 455 stainless steel is a martensitic chromium steel alloy with an addition of cobalt, molybdenum, titanium, and non-stabilizing nitrogen, offering a significant improvement in corrosion resistance over more traditional 400 series stainless steels. The grade’s corrosion resistance is enhanced through the presence of carbon, chromium, and nitrogen, which together form a protective oxide surface layer on the material’s surface.

Custom 455 stainless steel has high hardness and strength due to its martensitic microstructure, which is developed during tempering and strengthening. This hardening gives it superior wear and galling resistance and makes it an excellent choice for use in high-temperature application environments. Custom 455 stainless steel is highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking and has excellent fatigue resistance.

Custom 455 stainless steel is most commonly used in aerospace, defense, and medical applications where its superior strength, durability, and corrosion resistance are particularly beneficial. It is also commonly used in the automotive and petrochemical industries for components that require superior fatigue and wear resistance. Custom 455 stainless steel is also used for springs, blades, and turbine components in marine applications and in the oil and gas industry.

The grade is also non-magnetic, making it advantageous for applications where magnetic performance is critical, such as in electronic components and sensors. It offers superior machinability and can be processed with a wide range of standard techniques, including stamping, cutting, drilling, and welding. It is also available in a solution annealead and aged condition, providing even greater tensile strength and durability.

Custom 455 stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance and strength, making it an ideal choice for many engineering and aerospace applications. It is highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking and offers enhanced machining, cutting, and welding abilities. Its superior strength makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of heavy-duty industrial applications, from automotive and petrochemical components to high-end medical and aerospace equipment. The high toughness, fatigue resistance, and wear resistance make it a desirable material for components exposed to high temperatures, corrosive environments, and extreme loads.

Custom 455 (UNS S45500) is a high strength steel alloy that can be formed and heat treated to yield a tensile strength of 206000psi (1434MPa). It has outstanding corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and fatigue strength. Custom 455’s combination of properties make it one of the more widely used martensitic stainless steels for aerospace applications.

Custom 455 can be machined using typical tooling and equipment for other ferrous materials. Alloy 455 has good machinability, with low cutting forces which can lessen generated heat, thus promoting good tool life. The recommended cutting speeds range from 80-100 surface feet per minute. To ease cutting, it is recommended to cool the cutting area with a light coolant.

Custom 455 offers a broad range of formability characteristics including forming, bending, drawing and spinning of parts. However, due to its low ductility Custom 455 should only be formed after heat-treatment with a proper tempering or annealing period. Forming with Custom 455 is best done at warm or moderate temperatures, with fast and accurate work with focused forces.

Custom 455 has very good welding properties with its alloy being used in many different welded parts in the aerospace industry. The alloy is particularly resistant to welding cracking, fatigue and impact forces, as well as to high temperatures. Gas tungsten arc welding with a pulsed current should be used when welding Custom 455.

Custom 455 has good overall corrosion resistance due to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content. When exposed to salt-water environments, Custom 455 can form a passive film on its surface that self-repairs itself when exposed to oxygen. It also has excellent resistance to scaling at high temperatures, which increases its resistance to fruit juices, organic acids and food products.
