Six Degrees of Separation Theory

The Six Degrees of Separation Theory is a sociological concept that proposes that everyone on the planet is connected to each other by no more than six acquaintances or social connections. This theory was first put forward by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in 1929. He wrote a short story called “Chains” in which two characters discover that anyone in the world can be linked to anyone else in the world through a chain of just five acquaintances.

This idea seemed so remarkable that it made its way into popular culture. It was turned into a play by American playwright John Guare in 1990, and the movie of the same name in 1993. In the past two decades the six degrees of separation theory has been featured in numerous books, television shows, and even video games.

The idea behind the six degrees of separation theory is simple yet powerful. It suggests that any two people on the planet can be connected in just six steps by an intermediary, or bridge person. For example, if I wanted to get in contact with the CEO of a company, I might ask a friend of mine to go out for drinks with the general manager of the company. If my friend doesnt know the general manager, he or she can ask another friend who may have six degrees of separation from the CEO.

As the six degrees of separation theory proposes, this process would continue until Im connected directly to the CEO. So its not impossible to reach the CEO of the company Im looking for, but it will take some flexibility and research.

One of the most interesting things about the six degrees of separation theory is its implications for how people interact and connect with one another on a global scale. In the age of social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, were all connected to each other online. For instance, I may have never met my friends sister-in-law, but because were both connected through Facebook, I can now easily message her or send her a photo.

The six degrees of separation theory points to how easy it is in todays world to interact with people all across the globe, even if we dont know them personally. In other words, the world is getting smaller, not only due to physical advancements, but also due to our increased ability to stay connected to each other thanks to social media.

This idea brings to light the power of networks and connections. The six degrees of separation theory suggests that everyone on the planet is connected in some way or another, even if it is through an intermediary. This is why it is important to take advantage of all the networks at our disposal, since we can use them to our advantage in order to make connections and even potential partnerships with people around the world.

The six degrees of separation theory is not only an interesting concept, but its a reminder of the powerful connections that exist between people all across the globe. Whether its through networking or through social media, it is clear that we are all connected in ways that stretch further than we think.
