MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEEL S42020 2Cr13
Martensitic stainless steel S42020 2Cr13, also named 420 stainless steel, is a commonly used general-purpose, high-carbon martensitic stainless steel that contains no more than 0.03% sulfur, 1.0-1.2% carbon and 11-14% chromium. It is widely used and accepted in the production and processing of parts in multiple industries, especially in the food industry, due to its excellent corrosion resistance, good comprehensive characteristics and competitive price.
Martensitic stainless steel S42020 2Cr13 consists of chromium, carbon, and a large number of free iron. Its structure is clearly divided into two stages, namely the upper stage of interstitial solution and the lower stage of chromium-rich austenite. By taking appropriate heat treatment-quenching, the stable martensite state is formed and the corresponding properties are obtained. Because of this simple heat treatment process and its ability to form a single phase, it is often used to replace higher cost non-ferrous alloys in many applications.
The hardness of S42020 2Cr13 is between HRC27-HRC45. Specifically, its ultimate strength and yield strength are between 400 MPa and 800 MPa, and its tensile elongation and reduction of area are between 10% and 30%. Moreover, its annealed tensile strength is greater than 285 MPa, its ultimate strength is higher than 600 MPa, and its hardness is higher than HRC40. It has a low cost and can withstand larger load, making it an ideal material for various applications requiring cost-effectiveness and toughness.
The corrosion resistance of S42020 2Cr13 is only poor in certain highly corrosive environments because of the lack of nickel content. In order to improve the corrosion resistance, metalworking tools such as drilling, reaming, and tapping can be used. For martensitic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance, you can polish and process the surface of the material. In addition, with the addition of advanced processes such as electrolytic polishing and advanced surface treatments for passivation, the corrosion resistance of S42020 2Cr13 can be improved.
Due to its good comprehensive properties, S42020 2Cr13 is widely used in various industries. In the food industry, it can be used to make food grade stainless steel containers, utensils, kitchen knives, tableware, scissors, hard disc blades, etc., due to its strength and corrosion resistance. In the medical industry, it can be used to make medical instruments such as stretchers, hospital beds, surgical instruments, scalpels and syringes, due to its strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. In addition, it is also widely used in various industrial parts such as gears, bolts, rivets, shafts, pumps, etc., due to its strength, wear resistance and machinability.
In summary, S42020 2Cr13 is a type of martensitic stainless steel which has a low cost and good comprehensive properties. It is widely used in many industries such as the food industry, the medical industry and in the production of various industrial parts due its excellent corrosion resistance, strength, wear resistance and machinability. With correct heat treatment and proper polishing/surfacing processes, the corrosion resistance of S42020 2Cr13 can be significantly improved.
