The Tragedy of Public Ground
Public ground has been and continue to be a tragedy that cannot be ignored. Overpopulated public ground, pollution, destruction of nature and destruction of habitats for wildlife are all issues that plague public spaces.
Overpopulation: Growing populations and cramped living spaces have caused overcrowding of public ground. With limited resources – from parking to camping to social programs – and an ever-increasing population, public ground is the only parkland that citizens can turn to. Overuse of public ground has caused some park personnel to draw locations for open-use. Without management of public ground, due to heavy human contact, overgrowth of weeds and grass can stifle facility maintenance.
Pollution: Pollution from both industrial dumping and human activity has been known to cover public ground. From plastic bottles and cans to trash and cigarette butts, the world is facing an alarming rate of land degradation due to pollution. Pollution on public ground can be both aesthetically damaging and damaging to local wildlife, flora and fauna.
Destruction of Nature: Continuous expansion of development has resulted in loss of natural habitats. With less wooded or green spaces, wildlife and migratory birds are disappearing in our parks, leaving a desolate landscape behind. Furthermore, human interference is displacing wildlife habitats and forcing animals to relocate, resulting in disruption of their natural lives and habitats.
Destruction of Wildlife: By overusing public ground, the destruction of wildlife habitats begin with the loss of native species and the invasion of non-native species. Animal and bird populations are greatly affected by the destruction of natural resources in public ground. Trees are cut down for home construction and highways, leading to drastic loss of wildlife.
With these tragic effects of public ground, it is essential for people to recognize the importance of preserving, protecting and restoring public ground. Despite the destruction of land and wildlife, there are still initiatives, such as the support of local initiatives in protection of public spaces, that can help keep public ground safe for future use.
The tragedy of public space is a complex one that can only be met with preventative measures and a collective effort to protect it. With growing populations, limited resources and destruction of nature, the only possible way to enhance public ground is with better management a collective concern and preventive thinking. Through the preservation and protection of public space, people will be able to enjoy clean and safe parkland while also preserving nature and its inhabitants.
