316 austenitic stainless steel is a grade of stainless steel used in the fabrication of articles that require superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, in particular, pitting and stress-corrosion resistance properties. Other grade of stainless steels (such as 304 or other grades of austenitic stainless steels) offer superior corrosion resistance but cannot provide the mechanical properties offered by 316 stainless steel.
