Mechanical Properties of Custom 455 at Room Temperature
Custom 455 is a martensitic stainless steel that offers a combination of corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and strength. This alloy is composed of iron, chromium, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and titanium and is intended for use in applications that require a highly corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant material. Custom 455 also offers excellent formability and good weldability, making it an ideal choice for many different applications.
The mechanical properties of Custom 455 at room temperature are presented in the following table. The mechanical properties of this alloy are dependent on the amount of cold working and post-work heat treatment applied to the material. As a result, these properties may vary somewhat depending on the manufacturing process and the particular alloy composition.
Tensile Strength (ksi): 164-192
Yield Strength (ksi): 136-158
Elongation (% in 2 in): 10-20
Hardness (Rockwell C): 30-45 HRC
Reduction in Area (%): 35-50
Compressive Strength (ksi): 25-35
Impact Test (Izod or Charpy): Not available
Custom 455 is commonly used in applications where high strength and corrosion resistance are essential. This alloy is especially suitable for use in applications that require toughness and wear-resistance, such as turbine blades, fasteners, springs, and valves. It is also commonly used in paper mill and petroleum refining equipment, marine components, and cutting tools.
The alloy’s excellent corrosion resistance is related to its high chromium and molybdenum content and the formation of passivating protective layers on the surface of the material. Custom 455 is resistant to most corrosive agents and holds up well in marine atmospheres.
Custom 455 is a cost-effective choice for many applications and is considered to be a low-cost alternative to several higher-priced stainless steels. This alloy can be easily fabricated using conventional machining processes and welding techniques.
Custom 455 offers a wide range of mechanical properties, making it suitable for a variety of applications. With its combination of corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and strength, Custom 455 is an ideal choice for applications that require material performance in extreme environments or conditions.
