Description of the Application of UNS S31254 (1.4547) Stainless Steel

UNS S31254 (1.4547) stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel grade with an addition of molybdenum, nitrogen and a minimum number of other elements. It has outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion when used in chloride-containing environments and a yield strength approximately twice that of the lower-chromium austenitic stainless grades. Due to its high molybdenum content and nitrogen addition, UNS S31254 (1.4547) stainless steel is also extremely resistant to stress corrosion cracking. The combination of these attributes makes S31254 (1.4547) the material of choice for a wide range of industrial and chemical applications in the most corrosive environments, including offshore and petrochemical industries.

UNS S31254 (1.4547) stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance in chloride-contaminated environments. This is mainly due to its molybdenum content and resulting formation of a closely adherent protective chromium rich oxide film on the steel surface. The alloys chromium content enhances its resistance to oxidation and corrosion. Its nitrogen addition further enhances the corrosion resistance. The combination of these attributes makes 0.02% carbon, UNS S31254 (1.4547) stainless steel suitable for processes involving chlorine, hypochlorite and various acids.

In addition to its corrosion resistance, S31254 (1.4547) stainless steel offers superior strength. Its yield strength of 260 MPa is the highest of any stainless steel and the combination of strength and corrosion resistance makes it suitable for the most demanding engineering applications. In the most aggressive chloride-containing environments, UNS S31254 (1.4547) offers superior strength and excellent corrosion resistance compared to the traditional austenitic stainless steel grades.

UNS S31254 (1.4547) stainless steel is a popular material of choice for use in a wide range of industrial and chemical processing applications including pressure storage tanks, piping and tube fixtures, process vessels, valves and fitments, and chemical storage and containment. In the oil and gas industry, UNS S31254 (1.4547) stainless steel is used to manufacture subsea structures and piping systems, as well as in welding overlays for the production of sour gas. It is also used in offshore platforms, marine structures, process plants, as well as pumps and valves in the power, petrochemical, and chemical industries.

In summary, UNS S31254 (1.4547) stainless steel is a highly corrosion-resistant grade of stainless steel with excellent strength and outstanding pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments. Its strength, corrosion resistance and fabrication characteristics make it suitable for the most demanding engineering applications in chlorinated, acidic, acidic and saline-containing environments.
